Abstract
A sealing arrangement for a window in a motor vehicle, particularly for a vertically-sliding frameless window in a vehicle door comprises a mounting element 28 and a sealing member 29. The mounting element is secured to the roof frame 7 by means e.g. a screw 30 with a washer passing through an elongate hole 31 so that the position of the mounting element may be adjusted transversely. The sealing member has a hinge portion 43 and a clamping portion 34 which engages the flange 33 so that it can be in an access position (Fig. 4) while adjustment of the mounting element is carried out or in a closed position (Fig. 3) when operative. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
An improved sealing arrangement for the door window-pane of a motor vehicle
The invention relates to a sealing arrangement for a preferably frameless door window-pane of a motor vehicle.
In the case of a known window seal (German
Offenlegungsschrift 25 35 508) a holding element, which has U-shaped receiving portions, is secured to the underside of the roof frame by means of screws. By means of these receiving portions a sealing member, which co-operates with a frameless door window-pane, is held in position. A disadvantage of this design is that the fitting and manufacturing tolerances occurring in the frameless door window-pane, the sealing device and the roof frame must be absorbed by the sealing member through deformation mainly in the transverse direction of the vehicle, since no provisions are made for tolerance compensation.
In particular, in the case of vehicles with a removable roof, preferably of hinged design, additional tolerances occur which can only be compensated for with difficulty using known window seals.
The object of the invention is to provide a sealing device which allows the fitting tolerances which occur to be compensated in the transverse direction of the vehicle in a simple manner.
The present invention consists in a sealing device for a door window-pane of a motor vehicle, comprising a holding element and a sealing member, the holding element being held on a roof frame by releasable fastening means, the sealing member being held on the roof frame but movabie from an operating position to an assembly position which provides access to the fastening means to enable the position of the sealing member to be adjusted by way of the holding element transversely of the vehicle.
It is advantageous if the holding element engages under a receiving portion of the sealing member on one side and co-operates with the said sealing member by means of a releasable connection on the other side. The sealing member may be provided with a hinge-like area positioned adjacent the receiving portion. The receiving portion is preferably formed by a bent section which projects into a corresponding recess in the sealing, member. The releasable connection preferably comprises a stop on the holding element which is embraced by a clamping section of the sealing member, the stop extending along an auxiliary line which intersects the door window-pane below the sealing member or approximately parallel to the door window-pane at a distance therefrom.Preferably a fastening member, a part of which, forming a rain channel, is surrounded by a plastics covering, is interposed between the holding element and the roof frame and a deflector lip may be provided on a tubular section of the sealing member outside the door window-pane.
The advantages attained mainly by the invention may be seen in the fact that it is possible to compensate for tolerances by means of the adjustable holding element, i.e. to coordinate the sealing device with the frameless door windowpane so as to prevent the ingress of water, wind noise and draughts.
In the accompanying drawings:- Fig. 1 is a side view of the upper portion of a motor car,
Fig. 2 is a section taken along the line Il-Il of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a section corresponding to Fig. 2, but incorporating a sealing arrangement according to the present invention, and
Fig. 4 is a section corresponding to Fig. 3, but showing the arrangement under assembly.
Referring to Fig. 1, a motor car 1 comprising a windscreen 2 retained in position by a frame 3, and a removable roof 4, a transversely curved frame 5 and a rear window 6. The roof 4 is held on the frame 3 and 5 so as to be removable and includes a roof frame 7 and a roof panel 8 (Fig. 2).
The roof frame 7 consists of two integral, oppositely facing portions of V-shaped crosssection, the webs of which are designated 9, 1 0 and 11 The open side of the outer position faces downwards. The roof panel 8 is positioned above the roof frame 7 and is made up of a reinforcement sheet 12, a cloth layer 13, a foam material insert 1 4 and a synthetic leather covering 1 5 placed over the reinforcement sheet 12.
A roof lining 1 6 extends over the inner surface of the reinforcement sheet 12 and is held in position by adhesion to the reinforcement sheet 12 and by the extremity of the web 11.The reinforcement sheet 12 rests against the short web 9 of the roof frame 7 and its end portion forms an anchorage 1 8 which embraces the extremity of the web 9. The cloth layer 1 3 and the synthetic leather covering 1 5 are drawn inwards around the anchorage 1 8 of the reinforcement sheet 12 and are held there by an indented portion 20 of a fastening member 19. The fastening member 1 9 bears against the synthetic leather covering 15 and the roof frame 7 and is secured to the roof frame by screws 45 which are located in the indented portion 20.For this purpose, thickened portions 26 and threaded bores 17, which receive the screws 45, are provided locally in the outer portion of the roof frame 7. Also, the fastening member 1 9 has a flange 22 directed obliquely upwards and provided with a plastics covering 23. The plastics covered flange 22 and the end portion of the roof panel 8 to form a rain channel 21.
As shown in Fig. 3, a sealing device 24, which co-operates with an end portion 25 of a frameless door window-pane 27, is disposed beneath the fastening member 1 9. The sealing device 24 consists of a holding element 28 and a sealing member 29. The outside of the holding element 28 has a bent section 32 which co-operates with a corresponding receiving portion 37 of the sealing member 29, whilst on the inside (adjacent the passenger compartment) it has a stop 33 for a clamping portion 34 of the sealing member 29.
The holding element 28 is provided with an opening 31 , the diameter of which is greater than the diameter of the associated fastening means 30, thus producing a range of adjustment (D-D).
The bent section 32 may be formed semicircular, triangular or rectangular. The stop 33 extends either parallel to the profile of the window-pane at a distance therefrom, or along an
auxiliary line 44 which intersects the window
pane below the sealing member. The sealing
member 29 consisting of rubber has a laterally
arranged tubular section 35 in addition to the
clamping section 34. The tubular section 35 has a
transverse web 36 spaced from the holding
element 28, a receiving portion 37 and a sealing
area 39. A recess 38, into which the bent section
32 of the holding element 28 projects, extends
between the transverse web 36 and the receiving
portion 37. The sealing area 39 has a deflector lip
40 located outside the door window-pane and a support lip 41 located inside thereof. The deflector
lip 40 prevents the ingress of water into the
interior of the car through the sealing member. A step-shaped shoulder 42 for receiving the end
portion 25 of the window-pane 27 extends between these two lips 40, 41.
The sealing device 24 is secured to the roof frame 7 in such a way that the holding element 28 is first loosely pre-mounted by the fastening means 30 and the receiving portion 37 of the tubular section 35 is then pressed into the corresponding bent section 32 of the holding element 28, the sealing member 29 being in the assembly position B (Fig. 4). The fastening means are then tightened, the sealing member 29 is moved inwardly by way of a hinge-like area 43 situated adjacent to, or outside, the receiving portion 37 and the clamping section 34 is fitted on the stop 33. This position is described as the operating position A.
In order to be able to compensate the tolerances which occur in a motor car with a removable roof, preferably of hinged design, the sealing device may be adjusted in the transverse direction (C-C) of the vehicle. This is carried out with the door open, or the door window-pane iowered.
During adjustment the clamping section 34 is first detached from the stop 33, the sealing member 29 is then brought into the assembly position B and the fastening means 30, which are now accessible, are loosened by means of a screwdriver. After loosening the fastening means 30 the holding element 28 is brought into the desired position (adjustment range D-D) and the fastening means 30 are then tightened. The sealing member 29 is then moved from the assembly position B into the operating position A.
