Abstract

In the mechanical treatment such as brushing, scraping or similar surface treatment of carcasses, in particular pig carcasses (8), the carcasses are passing in vertical rotatable position one or more stations having several scraping or brushing devices (10, 17, 36, 37) capable of moving in the longitudinal direction of the carcass. Thus, a cleaning of the surface of the carcasses is achieved. Those regions (23, 25, 29) on the surface of the carcass that are hard to get at may be cleaned in a simple and sensitive way by rotating the carcass (8) to a predetermined position before passing a station and securing said position during the passage of said station and by moving at least some of the scraping or brashing devices (10, 17, 36, 37) towards and away from the carcass during their movement along the carcass, guided by a predetermined control curve (9, 16) being dependent on the said position, said curve being based mainly on the shape of the carcass of the region to be treated by the scraping or brushing devices. An apparatus (1) for performing said surface cleaning of the carcasses (8) comprises one or more stations having brushing or scraping devices (10, 17, 36, 37) movable along the passing carcasses. Said apparatus comprises rotating devices (39, 49, 71) capable of rotating the carcass to a determined position before each station and devices to secure said position during the passage through the station and at least some of the scraping or brashing devices are arranged to be moved towards and away from the carcasses, guided by a predetermined control curve (9, 16) during the movements of said brushing or scraping devices along the carcass (8), said control curve being dependent on the position of the carcass and based mostly on the shape of the carcass of the region to be treated by the brushing or scraping devices.
