Description
SPECIFICATION
A method of manufacturing a box having an inner lining of sheet material
The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a box having an inner lining of sheet material, such as paper, plastics material or aluminium foil, and to a box manufactured thereby.
Tubular lined boxes are very commonly used in packaging a variety of products. Among the lined boxes encountered in the market, for instance, are of the following: Alpen, Hyvan paivan aamuateria,
WK-lit', SOK-pakaste, Energol, and Rogga. Some of these known boxes are complicated and expensive to manufacture. Other known boxes sufferthe drawback that they do not close tightly enough, and some boxes are not suitable for filling on modern, highspeed packaging machines.
The invention provides in one aspect a method of manufacturing a box having an inner lining of sheet material wherein to a blank in sheet form is affixed a sheet of lining material, and wherein the blank provided with lining material is formed into a box having opposed front and rear sides, of equal breadth, two opposed lateral sides of equal breadth, and closing flaps for closing the box ends, characterized in that the lining material is affixed to the blank, in such manner that it projects over the end flaps by a distance of more than half of the breadth of the lateral sides of the box, and that the lining material along each of two opposite edges is affixed to two closing flaps which will be opposed to each other when the box is formed, that those closing flaps to which the lining material is affixed are folded outwardly to be flush with the respective end of the box, whereby the lining material becomes folded overthe respective box end so that at each end of the box those edge portions of the lining material which are not affixed to closing flaps will slightly overlap, and that the ends of the box are closed by folding the closing flaps inwardly to be flush with the respective box end, whereby both ends of the box are closed with both the lining material and the closing flaps.
The invention provides in a further aspect a method of manufacturing a box having an inner lining of sheet material, comprising (a) forming a blank with a sheet of lining material affixed thereto, the blank having four side panels, a first two of which are of equal breadth and are arranged to form opposed front and rear sides of the box and the second two of which are also of equal breadth and are arranged to form opposed lateral sides of the box, and a flap attached to each end of each side panel for closing the ends of the box, the lining material projecting over the end flaps by a distance of more than half the breadth of the lateral sides of the formed box and being affixed to each of the four side panels and to only those end flaps which are attached to the second two side panels, i.e. those side panels which are to form the lateral sides of the box (b) folding the side panels to form the front, rear and lateral sides of the box and joining the two end panels together, (c) folding outwardly the closing flaps to which the lining material is affixed so that they are flush with the respective box and so that the lining material becomes folded over the respective box end with opposed edge portions of the lining material not affixed to closing flaps overlapping slightly, and (d) closing the ends of the box by folding inwardly the closing flaps to the flush with the respective box end, whereby both ends of the box are closed with both lining material and closing flaps.
The invention also provides a box manufactured in accordance with the method set forth in either of the two preceding paragraphs.
Thus, with the aid of the above method a lined box can be manufactured with ends which can be tightly closed with both the lining material and the closing flaps. Furthermore, the above method can be used on modern, fast-operating packaging machines for filling the box and it can, moreover, be carried out with comparatively simple box blanks resulting in a simple and inexpensive structural design of the box.
The invention will be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:- Figure 1 shows one embodiment of a box blank for use in a method according to the invention,
Figure 2 is a plan view of one embodiment of a box at a stage of manufacture by a method according to the invention, before closure of the box ends,
Figure 3 shows the box of Figure 2 at a stage of manufacture in which one of a first pair of opposed closing flaps has been folded over the box end, upon the folded lining material,
Figure 4 shows the box of Figure 2 at a stage of manufacture in which the other of said first pair of opposed closing flaps has been folded down on the closing flap previously folded, and
Figure 5 shows the box of Figure 2 at a stage of manufacture in which a second pair of opposed closing flaps have been folded down on the first pair of opposed closing flaps.
Referring to Figure 1,there is shown therein one embodiment of a box blank used in a method according to the invention and the blank is indicated, in general, by the reference numeral 10. The box blank 10 comprises a blank 11, which may consist of, for example, cardboard, corrugated pasteboard or other material in sheet form, and a separate sheet of lining material 12 which may consist of for example, paper, plastics material or aluminium foil. The blank 11 comprises side panels 13, 14, 15 and 16. The side panels 13 and 14 will form the front and rear sides, respectively, of the box and the side panels 15 and 16 will form the lateral sides of the box. The panel 16 has an extension flap 17, by which the side panel 16 can be joined by adhesive to the side panel 13.The side panels 13-16 have respective closing flaps, 18-21 and 22-25 at opposite ends, by which the box ends can be closed.
It is essential in the method according to the invention that each of two opposed margins of the lining materia 1 12 is affixed to two closing flaps of the box blank 10, that is in this embodiment, to the closing flaps 20 and 21 and similarly to the closing flaps 24 and 25. The lining material 12 is also affixed in a
known mannerto the side panels 13-16 of the box
blank 10. In Figure 1,the adhesive outline on the
lining material 12 is indicated by broken lines. It is furthermore essential in the method according to the
invention that the lining material 12 projects beyond the side panels at both ends of the box by a distance which is more than half of the breadth loathe lateral sides 15 and 16, respectively, ofthe box.The distance by which the lining material 12 projects beyond the side panels is indicated byb in Figure 1 and the height of the box, byk. It is thus to be under stoodthatthedimensionb shall be more than 1/2 x
I. However, owing to practical reasons the dimensionb should not exceed the value 1/2 x I by more than about 1 mm because otherwise the closing of the box ends will be awkward.
Figures 2-5 show in greater detail those steps in the manufacture of the box by which the box ends are closed. Since the lining material 12 is affixed to the two opposed closing flaps 20 and 21 and, similarly, to the two opposed closing flaps 24 and 25, the lining material 12 will be neatly folded, as illustrated in Figure 2, overthe box ends byoutwardlyfolding the flaps 20 and 21, and 24 and 25 to be flush with the respective end of the box so that those opposed edge portions of the lining material 12 which are not adhered to the closing flaps 18 and 19 (and to closing flaps 22 and 23, respectively) are mutually slightly overlapped. Next, one of the two opposed closing flaps 18 and 19, i.e. for instance the closing flap 18, is folded inwardly to be flush with the box end, as shown in Figure 3.Similarly, at the other end of the box, the closing flap 22 is folded inwardly to be flush with the box end. Next, the other opposed closing flap 19 is folded down on the closing flap 18 to be flush with the box end, as shown in Figure 4. Similarly, at the other end of the box, the closing flap 23 is folded down on the closing flap 22. Finally, those closing flaps to which the lining material 12 has been adhered, i.e. the closing flaps 20 and 21 are folded down on the flap 19 to be flush with the box end.
Similarly, at the other end of the box, the closing flaps 24 and 25 are folded down on the closing flap 23. Hence one end of the box is tightly closed both with the lining material 12 and with the closing flaps 18-21 and similarly the other end of the box, with the lining material 12 and closing flaps 22-25.
Thus, it will be appreciated that the essential features of the method according to the invention are the affixing of the lining material 12 to the closing flaps of the blank 11 in the manner described above, and the closing of the box ends by folding the closing flaps 18-21, and 22-25 respectively, inwardlyto be flush with the box ends, whereby both ends of the box become tightly closed both with the lining material 12 and with the closing flaps 18-21, and 22-25
respectively. Of course, the invention is in no way critical regarding the order in which the closing flaps
18-21, and 22-25 respectively, are folded and the
order in which the closing flaps are folded may differ from the embodiment just presented.
Thus, one alternative closing order is that in which
the box ends are closed by folding inwardly to be
flush with the box end, firstly, one of of the opposed
closing flaps 18, 19, and 22,23 respectively, to which the lining material 12 is not affixed. Next, those opposed closing flaps 20, 21, and 24, 25 respectively, to which the lining material 12 is affixed may be folded inwardly to be flush with the box ends. Lastly the other of the two opposed closing flaps 18, 19 and 22,23 respectively, may be folded inwardly to be flush with the box ends.
Another alternative closing order is that in which the box ends are closed by folding inwardly to be flush with the box end, firstly, those opposed closing flaps 20, 21 and 24, 25 respectively to which the lining material 12 is affixed and subsequently those opposed closing flaps 18, 19, and 22,23 respectively, to which the lining material is not affixed.
The above method has been described only as applied to one particular box blank. It is obvious to a person skilled in the artthatthe method may also be applied in connection with other box blanks of a similar kind, without departing from the scope of the invention.
