Abstract
192,458. Johnston, J. T. M. Oct. 28, 1921 Boiling pan furnaces. - Bitumen or like material is melted on a directly-heated grid-like device constituted by a plurality of parallel tubes through which a heating fluid is passed and which is arranged so as to prevent the escape of solid or semi-solid material while. allowing the molten material to flow into a heated receptacle below it. In the form shown, the support comprises a grid of flue pipes 22 heated by the passage of furnace gases from a furnace 16, which heats also, by flue pipes 24 in parallel with the pipes 22, the receptacle 8 in which the molten material is collected. Separate furnaces 16, 12, respectively, may be used for heating the receptacle 8, and grid 22. A perforated plate 19 forms a portion of the grid, the tubes of which, in a heater for normally semi-solid materials, are closer together than is the case for normally solid material. By means of adjustable dampers 38, in the combustion chamber of the furnace 16, and 32, 34 in the flue 14, 26, respectively, of the furnaces 12, 16, the heating effects of the furnaces may be independently controlled. The molten material is drawn off by a pipe 40 passing through the combustion space between the receptacle 8 and the outer casing 10.
