Abstract

19,801. Lake, W. E., [K a t t e l l Manufacturing Co.]. Aug. 24. Razors. - The handle is arranged as a magazine to hold the blades, which can be discharged therefrom one at a time into a groove in the blade-holder hinged to the handle. The blade-carrying device consists of a hub 19, Fig. 8, fixed to a cap 18 and having a number of recesses 23, larger than the back 3 of a blade 1, and slits 22 in which the blades loosely fit, the ends of the slits being bevelled at 24 to facilitate the entry of the blades into the hub. The end 5, Fig. 6, of the handle consists of a tubular part 9, and a lug 8, to which the blade-holder is hinged, and it carries a shaft 13 on which the hub 19 is journaled, a projection 11 in the part 9 engaging with one of a series of notches 15, Fig. 3, in the end of a case 14, which encircles the hub 19 and is closed by the cap 18, fitting tightly thereon. The cap has a flange 29, which is engaged by a hood 28 having an internal boss 27 which screws on to the end of the shaft 13, a spring 31 arranged between the cap and hood preventing rotation of the case; by slackening the hood, the projection 11 can be disengaged from a notch 15 and the case turned. There are twice as many notches 15 as there are blade-carrying recesses 23, so that either a blade 1 or a rib 20 will be opposite an aperture 7 in the end 5 of the handle, and an aperture 10 is provided in the tubular part 9 of the handle, so that the lugs between the notches 15 can be viewed. Every alternate lug is numbered to correspond to a blade, and when a number is opposite the aperture 10, the handle can be turned up in line with the blade-holder and a blade slides out into the groove 38 formed between the plates of the blade-holder 40. These plates 32, 33, Figs. 1 and 3, are pivoted at 36 on either side of the lug 8, one plate having pins 37 which loosely engage holes in the other plate, and the plates are clamped together with a blade between them by a clasp 48 pivoted to the holder and having ribs 49 which engage the sides of the plates; a finger-piece 50 is provided. A guard 51 may be used on either side of the blade, being secured by the clasp 48 and positioned by projections 52, which engage with a hole 43 and a groove 42 in the holder. The holder may be turned over the back of the handle for packing.
