Abstract
6832. Lake, H. W., [Cutler-Hammer Manufacturing Co.]. March 22. Switches, quick - action.-A snap-action switch consists of a double push-button 15, 15 carrying a cam 15, preferably in the form of a double frustum, which acts on a helical spring, embracing it wholly or in part, in such a way that, on pushing the button until the widest part of the cam enters the spring. the spring is extended and then contracts, giving a quick action to the movable contact. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the movable contact 18 consists of a plate through which the cam passes and which is provided with extensions engaging the fixed contacts 17. The bent helical spring is mounted between this plate and a second plate fixed to it. On pushing the button 15, the spring is extended until the widest part of the cam is within the spring, whereupon it suddenly contracts, running down to the narrow end of the cam and carrying the contact with it. In the form shown in Fig. 6, each end of the spring 25 is connected to a short lever 21, Fig. 9, which carries the movable contacts 23 engaging the fixed contact 24. The lower end 22 of the lever rests against the cam. On pushing the button 15, the lever is first turned until the spring 25 is extended, whereupon the spring contracts, giving a quick break. Similarly, by pressing the button 15, a quick make is obtained. In the form shown in Fig. 13, the cam 26 is loosely mounted on the spindle 27 of the push-buttons, and the spring 28 is retained in a central position by the plates 29. The movable contacts are carried by the sleeve 30 connected to the cam. On pressing the button 27, the spring is extended until the middle point is reached, whereupon it contracts, forcing the contact sleeve 30 against the fixed contacts.
