Abstract
173,079. Robertson, J. H. Sept. 27, 1920. Conning-towers.-Observation apertures comprising aligned front and rear slots b, c, as described in Specifications 128,607 and 129,477, [both in Class 20 (i), Buildings and structures, Kinds &c. of] are made continuous to provide all-round vision the inner slot being glazed in a gas-tight and water-tight manner. The slots are formed between a pair of upper conical or mushroom shaped members a<1>, d<1> and a pair of lower flanged cylindrical members a<2>, d<2>. The lips a<4>, d<3> round the slots are shaped to deflect bullets into the annular chamber a, which may be lined with splinter-absorbing material. The rear slot c is glazed preferably with plates f of triplex glass arranged between blocks d<4> which serve to support the member d<1> on the member d<2>. The glass is packed so as to be both gas and water tight, and the chamber a may be drained through an opening a<5>. The member a' may be raised and lowered with respect to the member d<1> by a screw-device to vary the size of the forward slot. The interior of the member d<1> which accommodates the head of the observer may be fitted with pads g.
