Abstract

170,173. O. D. Cars, Ltd., and Eves, F. S. Aug. 25, 1920. Lubricant conveyed by mechanical means.-The differential gearing of a motor-vehicle is lubricated by oil flung up by the crown-wheel B<1> and caught in a scoop or trough A arranged adjacent to the teeth of the wheel. Oil from the trough is led by a pipe a to a helical coil of wire G surrounding one of the axle shafts D but prevented from rotating, which carries it into the differential housing B, passages being provided to lead it to the various parts. The coil G is surrounded by a sleeve E projecting from the housing B, and may be prevented from rotating by carrying its end e into the orifice a<1> of the pipe a. Oil is also led from the trough A by a passage F to the housing G<1> of the bevel pinion. An intermediate bearing K in the torque tube may be lubricated by causing oil to travel thereto from the housing G<1> by means of a helical coil h fixed to the shaft within a tube h<1>.
