Abstract

Cup-and-ball and like toys held in the hand.- An appliance is provided for projecting a top or ball under centrifugal force frorn a split hoop within which the top is rotated and which may be opened for projecting and catching the top. The appliance comprises wire rings a, Fig. 2, secured at a fixed distance apart by cross ties e and attached to a handle m having a hinged lever d which is connected by a cord c to an arm b secured to the hoop. The end a<11> of the appliance is formed tangential to the hoop, and the end a<1> normally abuts against the end a<11>. The player rotates the top within the hoop by giving a see-saw movement to the appliance, and by pressing on the lever d opens the ends of the hoop so that the top is projected into the air. The top is then caught in the hoop and the operation repeated. In a modification, the hoop is formed of sections i, i<1>, Fig. 4, secured to the hinged portions p of the handle. The ends of the hoop are maintained closed by a spring r arranged between the handle portions, and may be opened by pressing the handle. In another arrangement, the ends of the hoop may be opened and closed by operating a lever j, Fig. 6, which is hinged to the handle and connected by cords k to the end a<1> of the hoop. The hoop may be formed of channel-sectioned metal or other flexible material and the top with axial extensions.
