Abstract
161,328. Gilmartin, W. M. Jan. 20, 1920. Hooks, closed and automatic-release.- A grapple comprises an inverted U-shaped body 1, Fig. 1, of channelsection, the outer end of the arms being bifurcated at 4 and shaped, to provide substantially horizontal abutments 15 to engage abutments 14 on the upper edges of pivotally-mounted swinging jaws 12 to hold them against movement beyond t h e i r closed position, the jaws having ends adapted to contact with one another or to assume a lapped relation when the, jaws are closed. The grapple is connected to hoisting-machinery &c. by a loop 7 pivoted by a pin 8 to a. swivel pin 6 secured in the body 1 by a head 9 countersunk in a washer 10. To lock. the jaws in their closed position, spring-pressed pins 17 are used. To prevent locking, the pins 17 are withdrawn and turned so as to move projections 18, Fig. 8, out of alignment with reduced portions 19 of keyholes 20. The jaws shown are automaticallyattaching jaws, but these may be replaced by automatically-detaching jaws having heavy outer portions. Specification 18367/11 [Class 78 (iv) Loading &c.], is referred to.
