Abstract
169,490. Schat, A. P. June 17, 1920. Self - sustaining gear. - Blocks or tackles in which, as shown, one or more pulleys 6, 7, 8 may be held stationary, as described in Specification 167,360, while lowering the load, are provided with means adapted to brake one or more parts of the cable to hold the load. The difference between the tendencies of the bights 25, 26 in the fixed and hauling lengths of the cable to straighten themselves supplies pressure to a member 15 in order to apply the brakes 23, 24 when lowering or to release the brakes when raising. One or more members 27, similar to the brake shoe 23, 24, is or are secured to the shaft 22 and press on the cable, on one or more of the pulleys, when it is desired to hold the load. A lever extension 28 is provided by which the brakes may be manually controlled, and, in a modification, the pulley and rope brakes may be operated independently by connecting them to separate operating levers. The braking means may be applied to either the upper or the lower sheave or to both sheaves.
