Abstract

1537264 Jib cranes ENGINEERING COMPONENTS Ltd 27 Nov 1975 5816/75 Heading B8H A crane comprises a support pillar 4, a jib 5 pivoted at 6 to the upper end of the pillar 4 and a longitudinally extensible actuator for luffing the jib (shown as an hydraulic ram 13), pivoted at 10 to the pillar 4 and at a trunnion 12 to a sleeve 11 arranged to slide on the jib 5. The position of the sleeve 11 is controlled in accordance with the luffing angle of the jib 5 by a rod 17 passing through a guide 18 on the jib 5 and connected to the trunnion 12, the rod 17 having a follower 16 sliding in a cam slot 15 in a plate 14. The profile of the cam slot 15 is determined so that the effective lifting cone (i.e. the force applied by the actuator) to lift a given load may approach but cannot exceed a prechosen maximum safe working load for the crane at any point in the range of angular motion of the jib 5 relative to the support pillar 4. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates an embodiment where the position of the sleeve 11 is controlled by a lever (20) pivoted to the sleeve 11 and to a point (21) in a plate (19) attached to the top of the pillar 4 the position of the pivot (21) and the length of the lever (20) being selected to give the desired movement of the sleeve 11.
