Abstract

1528908 Seat belts CAM GEARS Ltd 13 Oct 1975 [4 Nov 1974] 47502/74 Heading A3V [Also in Division B7] The front bumper 28 of a vehicle is moved rearwardly on collision of the vehicle to cause fluid to flow both to a chamber 26 in the vehicles steering column and to a chamber 54 in a seat belt mounting, so that the vehicles steering wheel (not shown) is retracted and so that seat belts 42, 44 of the vehicle are tightened. As illustrated, the bumper 28 is connected to a piston 34 associated with a chamber 36 connected by fluid lines 38, 56 to the chambers 26, 54. A flow restrictor 40 prevents retraction of the steering wheel and tightening of the seat belts in a minor collision. The chamber 26 is formed between slidably engaged members 4, 6 of the steering column. Steering shaft portions 8 and 10 are connected by a tubular connector 12. In a severe collision, a connecting pin 14 shears to allow steering shaft portion 8 to move into tubular connector 12. In a modification of the illustrated arrangement, the restrictor 40 is replaced by a spring-loaded non-return valve
