Abstract
1520635 Road/rail vehicles ARMFIELD ENG Ltd 3 Oct 1975 [4 Oct 1974] 43133/74 Heading B7D In mobile inspection apparatus comprising a wheeled vehicle 1 having an elevatable boom assembly which carries an inspection platform or gondola 8, the vehicle 1 has main wheels 2 equipped with wide solid rubber tyres so that they can run on a road or on a railway, steering mechanism associated with the front ones of the main wheels 2 is locked when running on rails, and retractable guide wheels 13, 14 are engageable with lateral faces of the rails to keep the main wheels 2 on the rails. Screw jacks 17, 18 move pivoted supports 15, 16 for the guide wheels 13, 14 between extended and retracted positions, and the guide wheels 13, 14 are adjustably mounted on the supports to allow for variations in track gauge. The vehicle is supported on the main wheels 2 by suspension springs which are rendered inoperative when running on rails by lowering screw jacks 19 into engagement with the axles of the wheels 2. The steering mechanism is locked when running on rails by a lever, Fig. 2 (not shown) which is pivotally mounted on the front axle and is moved into engagement with an element of steering mechanism when one of the screw jacks 19 is lowered.
