Abstract
1516394 Automatic mail weighing PITNEYBOWES Inc 5 June 1975 [5 June 1974] 24243/75 Heading G1W A mail handling system automatically weighs and imprints.the relevant postage upon individual envelopes as they are fed through the system. The general arrangement is shown in Fig. 1 where envelopes are stacked on edge on feeder deck 11 separated at 14, if desired the flaps sealed at 17, weighed individually on scale 19 at station 20 and passed to postage meter station 28 where the imprint is provided through meter 24 controlled by signals received from weighing station 20. Overweight mail is diverted out of the feed path to stack 26 prior to being fed to meter 24. Weighing station and photo-detector system (Fig. 2) An individual envelope 30 advanced by rollers 32 is stopped by sets of fingers 37, 38, 39 and then released so as to stand on edge in the trough 35 of weighing tray 33. Deflection of leaf-springs 45, 46 under the weight of the envelope is sensed by a bank of photo-detectors 57 an arm 51 attached to tray 33 interrupting the light path 55 from source 53 through prism 56 to the detectors. Before each envelope is weighed, an automatic device including motor 63 and spring 65 resets the zero datum with respect to the photo-conductors. Postage meter station Fig. 7 (not shown) A conventional postage meter with printing units manually settable to the required postage rates is modified by the provision of automatic stepping motors controlled directly from the weighing station with an intervening multiplier device converting the weights into postage rates.
