Abstract

1514569 'G' clamps H P ECCLESTON 12 Oct 1976 [16 Dec 1975 4 March 1976] 51390/75 and 08628/76 Heading B4W In a 'G' clamp in which the bar portion 18 is substantially I shaped cross section and the ends 11 and 13 of the bar portion 10 form an anvil and thread part respectively, the web 16 of the section lies in a plane which passes through the threaded part 11 and the inner and outer flanges 14 and 15 lie at right angles to the web and have radii of curvature R 1 and R 2 respectively. The bar portion of the clamp is so dimensioned that the value of an index is defined by the ratio (b 1 À R 2 )/(b 2 R 1 ) which lies between 7 and 10 where b 1 = the width of the inner flange b 2 = the thickness of the web and the centres of the radii R 1 and R 2 are spaced apart in a direction perpendicular to the planes of the flanges. An empirical formula for the calculation of the stress in the portion 18 is given. The bar portion may be made in synthetic plastics material which may include fibre-glass. The screw-threaded jaw may be made of the same material as the bar portion and may be provided with a two-start thread. The fixed jaw portion 13 is provided with gripping ribs 23.
