Abstract

1509260 Resin-impregnated fibrous laminates NORSK HYDRO AS 17 Nov 1975 [18 Nov 1974] 47323/75 Heading B5N A laminate is produced by assembling a plurality of resin-impregnated sheets of fibrous material in a stack, at least one outer surface of a surface sheet of the stack having applied thereto a coating comprising an aqueous solution or dispersion of a material including or consisting of a polysaccharide or a salt thereof, and bonding the assembled sheets together at elevated temperature and pressure, the coating having, after drying, a solids, content of not less than 0À20 g./m.<SP>2</SP>. The coating serves as a separating medium during pressing so that a plurality of laminates pressed at the same time in a press are easily separated, and results in a surface which is readily bondable to a substrate, e.g. chipboard, using water based glues, e.g. resorcinol resin, urea resin or polyvinyl acetate, impact or hot-melt adhesives. A thin decorative laminate may be bonded to both sides of the chipboard. The polysaccharide may be alginic acid or pectic acid or a salt thereof, carboxymethyl cellulose, starch or dextrin or a mixture thereof and the coating composition may also contain chalk and melamine-formaldehyde resin. In the preparation of decorative laminates comprising sheets of kraft paper impregnated with phenol-formaldehyde resin and a decorative paper impregnated with melamine formaldehyde.resin, the coating composition maybe applied to the back surface of the kraft sheet and dried prior to bonding at elevated temperature and pressure, the decorative surfaces in the press being separated by caul plates. Alternatively where a dull surface is required the coaling material may also be used as a separating medium between two decorative surfaces.
