Abstract
1,006,399. Laminates. ASAHI TOKOSHU GOHAN KABUSHIKI, KAISHA. July 18, 1963 [July 18, 1962], No. 28544/63. Drawings to Specification. Heading B5N. An adhesive bonded, laminated, decorative wood panel comprises a base wood member, a decorative face veneer layer and a fibrous interlayer having a thickness of from 0À04 to 0À3 mm. The base may be a single wood layer or plywood made from, e.g. Lanan or Douglas Fir. The fibrous interlayer may be a woven or non-woven sheet preferably made from regenerated or other cellulosic fibres such as cellulose acetate or viscose rayon, although natural cellulosic fibres such as cotton and hemp, inorganic fibres such as glass or metal, or synthetic fibres such as polyamide, polyester, polyolefine and polyacrylonitrile may be used. When a woven fabric is employed, the ratio warps: woofs is preferably of the order 30/70 : 70 to provide greater strength in the woof direction; the woof direction is then arranged at right angles to the direction of the wood fibres of the base. Suitable adhesives for uniting the layers are thermoplastic resins such as polyvinyl acetate or thermosetting resins such as melamine-urea formaldehyde, urea formaldehyde or melamine formaldehyde; alternatively, a mixture of a thermoplastic resin and a thermosetting resin may be used. In assembling the laminate, a wet process may be employed whereby an adhesive impregnated interlayer is placed between a base layer and a face veneer and the whole is subjected to heat and pressure; alternatively, the adhesive may be applied to the base and allowed to dry, whereupon the interlayer is applied by hot pressing, a face veneer is then applied either by the wet or dry process. In examples, the wet process is carried out using an adhesive prepared by mixing 70 parts of a melamineurea resin (solids content 70%) and 30 parts of a polyvinyl alcohol; the dry process is carried out using an adhesive comprising 50 parts of a urea resin adhesive (solid content 70%) and 50 parts of polyvinyl acetate (solids content 50%), drying being effected at 20‹ C. for 5 hours.
