Abstract

1508631 Closing containers IN DA TE AG 19 Jan 1976 [20 Jan 1975] 2402/75 Heading B8T A re-usable container, formed preferably from stainless steel, laquered tin-plate or aluminium, has a mouth ring 5, preferably formed of natural or synthetic rubber or stainless steel, bonded to the end 6 of its wall 1 by adhesive or welding as appropriate. The mouth ring 5 is thicker than the wall 1 and has its internal surface shaped to receive and lock in position upstanding peripheral flange 10 of a tin-plate closure 11. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 the flange 10 is received against a face 9 which slopes outwardly, e.g. at an angle of 10 degrees to the vertical and locked in position by a barb 12. An upstanding annular shoulder 13 extends into a recess 17 in the closure 11 against a resilient sealing member 19. The chamfered surface 7 bears against a matching surface on a ring of sealing material of a filling apparatus (Fig. 4, not shown). The container is opened by pressing downwardly on the centre of the closure by means of a plunger thereby causing the flange 10 to be released from the barb 12. In the embodiment of Fig. 5 the mouth ring 5 is rolled from a strip of the same material as the container. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 a groove 28 constitutes a seating for an 0-ring seal 29 against which the flat bottom of the closure 11 is pressed into engagement. The container and mouth ring are constructed to facilitate stacking of empty containers one within another. Instead of an integral base 2, the lower end of the container may have a second mouth ring 5 and closure 11. When the container is empty the second closure is removed, thereby facilitating cleaning of the container.
