Abstract

1508483 Heat exchanger tubes UOP Inc 21 May 1975 [21 Aug 1974] 21758/75 Heading F4S [Also in Division B3] A process for improving the heat transfer capability of a metal heat transfer surface comprises knurling the surface and then finning the knurled surface. Tube 10 is passed over a mandrel (14), Fig. 3 (not shown) from left to right and surrounded by four tools, each as shown in Fig. 4, so that it is first knurled by portion 26, then finned by portions 30 and 16. The process produces splits (36), Fig. 2 (not shown) of a desired size in the outer tips of the fins, to provide nucleate boiling sites. The tube is of copper. The inside of the tube may be left plain or processed, e.g. by internal ridging.
