Abstract

1304861 Heat exchangers TRANE CO 11 March 1971 6611/71 Heading F4S A heat exchange surface 1 which may be flat or tubular, has fins 2 thereon, and at least the tip 6 of each fin is bent towards the neigbouring fin so that between each pair of adjacent fins is formed a continuous re-entrant cavity 10 having a restricted opening of width "a". The preferred width of gap "a" is from 0À001 to 0À005 inch. The surface is intended to promote nucleate boiling of a liquid flowing over the surface. In a refrigerating system described using an evaporator of the shell and tube type, the evaporator tubes are provided with the finned surface in the form of a helical fin, and the width of the gap "a" is between 0À0015 and 0À0035 inch. The fins shown, overlap by a distance "b" which is preferably one-half to one and one-half times the thickness of the fin.
