Abstract
1502430 Visual range estimating DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 11 Sept 1975 [13 Sept 1974] 40127/74 Heading G1A Visual range estimating apparatus comprises: light sources 1-n each including a filament, e.g. (n-2) Fig. 2 and a photo-transistor 30 mounted in a protective enclosure 9; respective switching circuits 31-34 each adjacent a light source; and a control circuit 4 including a D.C. source 21-27 and means 5 for applying a current to a selected switching circuit to switch off the associated source. The sources 1-n Fig. 1, spaced out e.g. along a runway, are viewed from an observation point to determine the visual range by identifying the farthest visible source (e.g. (n-2) just within a limit of visibility 8). To enable the sources to be easily identified and distinguished from other sources, each filament is connected to normallymade contacts 31a of a relay 31 operable from a control unit 4 at the observation point by means of a selector 5 in series with a push-button 6, whereby each filament in turn can be switched off, until the last filament seen to blink is regarded as being at the visual limit. In order that a lamp which has failed to blink because it is faulty shall not be mistakenly supposed to be out of range, an integrity lamp 7 lights up on pressing the button 6, but only if the selected filament is serviceable. The control unit Fig. 2 comprises a constantcurrent source with over-voltage protection 20-28 supplying, via the integrity lamp 7 and the button 6, the selector 5 shown at the (n-2)th position. Pressure on the button 6 supplies current through the integrity lamp 7 to the relay 31, only provided that the series photo-transistor 30 is rendered conductive by a serviceable filament (n-2). Contacts 31a then open to extinguish the filament, but contacts 31b close to hold the circuit through the integrity lamp 7 until the button 6 is released. The selector 5 has an (n+1)th TEST position for testing the integrity lamp 7 itself.
