Description
(54) VICES AND HAND OPERATED HAND TOOLS
(PARALLEL JAWS FOR TOOLS-ADDITION) (71) I, LEONARD ARTHUR STEBBINGS, 10, Wordsworth Road, Penenden Heath,
Maidstone, Kent, British, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
This invention is concerned with vices and hand operated clamping tools and is an improvement in or modification of the invention claimed in my patent specification No.
1472278.
In the above specification I describe in a second aspect: A hand operated clamping tool comprising a body member with a fixed jaw and elongate shaft; a movable jaw slidable along the elongate shaft or pivotted to the elongate shaft. In this specification I describe a hand operated clamping tool as claimed in claim 2, 5 or 6 of United Kingdom Patent No.
1,472,278 and in which the fixed jaw is replaced by a first jaw pivotted to one end of the elongate shaft, the movable jaw is pivotted to the elongate shaft and the first jaw is provided with a fixed pivot mating with a slot provided on the second movable jaw.
One preferred arrangement of the invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: THE FIGURE: Is a diagrammatic plan view of a wrench or spanner shown in the locked position.
There is provided an elongate shaft I which may be solid or "U" section as shown, two jaws 2 and 4 each pivot on elongate shaft
1 at 3 and 7 respectively, said jaws 2 and 4 interact by means of pivot on jaw 2 and slot 6 in jaw 4 to maintain parallelism. An abutment 9 encloses and is slidable on elongate shaft 1, said abutment 9 carries a pivot 17 on which rotates lever 11 the heel of which bears against sliding insert 10 which in turn bears against the inner surface of elongate arm 1. On the outer end of lever 11 is pivot 12 on which hangs the handle 8, handle 8 has a second pivot 13 to connect via link 14 and pivot 15 with jaw 4. An expansion spring 16 is compressed between stop 18 and insert 10.
To operate, the tool is held in the hand with handles open and the abutment 9 is pulled down the elongate shaft 1 thereby compressing spring 16 and causing insert 10, handle 8 and link 14 to move similarly and jaw 4 to rotate on pivot 7 and due to pivot 5 and slot 6 for jaw 2 to rotate on pivot 3 and open in parallel fashion. The article to be gripped is placed between the jaws 2 and 4 and the abutment 9 is released thereby allowing spring 16 to urge abutment 9 up the elongate shaft 1 and for all the associated and linked members to move accordingly until the jaws lightly grasp said article.Handle 8 is then closed towards elongate shaft 1, causing the heel of lever 11 to press insert 10 firmly against the inner edge/surface of elongate shaft I thereby creating a brake, as pivot 13 and link 14 move outwards the toggle action obliges jaw 4 to move upwards and thereby tighten and finally lock on the article held when the over-centre position is reached and the cranked portion of handle 8 meets the elongate shaft I or is stopped by other simple means. To release the handle 8 is eased away from elongate shaft 1 and spring 16 maintains handle 8 in an open position.
WHAT I CLAIM IS:
1. A hand operated clamping tool as claimed in claim 2, 5 or 6 of United Kingdom
Patent No. 1,472,278 and in which the fixed jaw is replaced by a first jaw pivotted to one end of the elongate shaft, the movable jaw is pivotted to the elongate shaft and the first jaw is provided with a fixed pivot mating with a slot provided on the movable jaw.
2. A hand operated clamping tool as

Claims (3)
2. A hand operated clamping tool as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein either fixed or variable stops are included to limit or finely adjust the handle ansl orXjaw movement.
3. A hand operated clamping tool substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
