Abstract

1472278 Workpiece clamping; wrenches L A STEBBINGS 13 May 1975 [19 April 1974] 17293/74 Headings B3B and B3N [Also in Division B4] A hand operated clamping tool, e.g. a hand vice, bench vice, adjustable spanner or wrench, carpenters cramps or expanders, in which a first member 12, 31 having a fixed jaw has slidably or pivotally mounted thereon a second member 11, 32 having the movable jaw, comprises friction means 15, 35 and a linkage or cam mechanism actuated by a handle 17, 37 so that initially the friction means 15, 35 grips its complementary member 11, 31, and further movement of the handle effects closing movement of the movable jaw to grip a workpiece or article between the jaws. An over-centre arrangement holds the handle 17 in the tightened condition. In a vice (Fig. 1) a fixed body member 12 houses friction pads 15 which are pulled inwards to grip slidable member 11 by means of a linkage 18-23. The handle pivots about pivot 18 which is fixed to body member 12 so that once the friction pads grip the member 11 further pivoting of handle 17 causes sliding movement of member 11 to grip an article between the jaws. A hand clamp or wrench (Fig. 2) includes an abutment member 42 which is slidable along a shaft portion 31. A pivoted cam 35 having a heel portion grips the shaft portion 31 when handle 17 is initially pivoted, and further pivoting causes the movable jaw 32 to grip an article. Various internal or external, cam, friction pad, or linkage locking and tightening arrangements are disclosed, and the jaws may grip externally or internally, and may provide cutting blades.
