Description
(54) BOOK COVERS
(71) 1, HUGUETTE CLAIRE
ARNTZEN, of Belgian Nationality, of, I
Avenue Franklin Roosevelt, 1050 Brussels,
Belgium, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- The present invention relates to kits for making removable book covers and, more particularly, book covers or wrappers which serve both a decorative and a protective function.
Protective coverings or outer wrappings for books of different dimensions have long been available. Many different techniques have been developed and used, with varying success, in providing both decorative and functional protective wrappings. However, the coverings and covering techniques of the prior art have not always been fully satisfactory, particularly in accommodating books of different height. It is usual for wrapping material to be cut or folded to the height of the book and then wrapped completely there-around. End flaps are tucked under the front and rear covers thereby covering all exposed surfaces. Such a cover has the obvious disadvantage in being easily displaceable from the book unless some means, such as a tape or pressure sensitive adhesive, are provided for directly attaching or affixing the cover to the book.Of course, any such attachment means has its own disadvantage in the potential of damaging the book itself when the book covering has to be replaced.
In order to overcome some of the abovenoted disadvantages, prior art methods, as exemplified by those shown in French
Patents No. 2,048,098 and No. 807,264, have been proposed wherein loops or pockets are provided for receiving the front or rear covers of the book to prevent inadvertent displacement of the cover. However, once a fixed pocket or loop is provided, it becomes impossible to cut or fold the wrapper to accommodate different books of different height. Moreover, the covers are not held tightly in place when the book is open which increases the likelihood that the cover will be torn or otherwise damaged when in use.
It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to cover a book with a protective and aesthetically pleasing outer covering which is fixed in position without any attachment to the book and which may be readily conformed to books of greatly varying dimensions.
According to this invention I propose a kit for making a removable book cover having a spine and front and back portions, the kit comprising a cover sheet and means for locating where rectilinear cuts or folds can be made in the cover sheet to accommodate books of different sizes, so that the cover can be made with alternative widths of spine and sizes of front and back portions, the means comprising a plurality of sets of markings, each set corresponding to a width of spine, height of cover portion or width of cover portion, located either on the cover sheet or on a member with which the cover sheet can be associated and confined to areas in which cuts or folds are necessary when a cover is made.
The cover sheet may be transparent or opaque. It can be made of paper, cardboard, imitation leather or plastic.
In one embodiment, the kit comprises an opaque decorative strip attached or for attachment to the spine portion of the cover sheet either on the inside or outside thereof.
Series of markings may appear on the cover sheet itself or on a separate sheet.
When the cover sheet is transparent the member comprises a sheet separate from the cover sheet and bearing the said series of markings.
The separate location sheet, can be thrown away after use. The said plurality of sets of markings preferably comprise a series of parallel continuous and/or discontinuous lines along an upper and/or lower edge portion of the cover sheet or location sheet and/or near to one or both side edges, another series of parallel continuous and/or discontinuous lines.
The location lines are near enough to each other to enable measurement of the book with great accuracy.
The lines forming the above mentioned series of lines can be spaced apart by e.g.
0.25 cm. Figures (numbers) or letters can be assigned to each line in a series to indicate the distance to a corresponding line of the same series or of another series of lines or to a free parallel edge of the sheet which these series of lines are drawn.
When the kit includes an opaque spine strip applied or intended to be applied on a transparent cover sheet, the strip may have on one side, preferably its reverse side, a plurality of sets of markings comprising parallel, continuous and/or discontinuous vertical lines and optionally, a series of horizontal parallel continuous and/or discontinuous lines, along the upper and/or lower horizontal edges of the spine strip.
The cover sheet and/or the spine strip are advantageously decorated with coloured ornamental designs and drawings, appropriate to the various sizes of books to be covered.
The spine strip intented to be applied on the cover sheet may have on at least a part of one of its sides, an adhesive making it possible to fix it to the cover sheet.
The spine strip, may have applied to its reverse side a self adhesive tape strip, so as to present a flap at least at one of its ends, this flap therefor being covered with a self adhesive tape, so as to be fixed on the front of the cover sheet after having been folded over on the edge of the latter.
To fix the spine strip to the cover sheet, two labels can be used, of which one of them is pre-glued to the spine strip and the cover sheet.
In another embodiment, the kit comprises, a support strip and means for attaching the spine strip to the support strip of the spine strip after application of these strips to the cover sheet, the support strip being applied to the cover sheet on the same side or on the side opposite to the spine strip. This support strip and spine strip can be hingedly connected together at one end and may bear an adhesive for attaching the support strip to the spine strip and to the cover sheet.
The kit may also include two leaflets which are preferably rectangular and may be either opaque or transparent (e.g. made of paper or plastics material) and of a height equal or superior to the one of the book to be covered and a width inferior to that of the book, adapted for attachment to the cover sheet, so as to form on the inside of the cover sheet, near to each of its lateral edges, a loop, the loops respectively receiving the back and front cover of the book to be covered, and optionally side flaps on the cover sheet. One entire side or an upper and/or lower edge, of one side of the leaflets is a self adhesive coat, preferably covered with a removable protective strip so that the edges of the leaflets can be fixed either to the inner side of the cover sheet or after folding the edges over the longitudinal edges of the cover sheet on the outer side of the cover sheet or to the inner side of an intermediate sheet.
In another embodiment, the kit may comprise one or more, preferably two, intermediate sheets which can be placed between the cover sheet and the book to be covered. When a single intermediate sheet is used, the latter is advantageously glued to the cover sheet along the spine portion thereof, whereas when two intermediate sheets are used, one of these intermediate sheets is attached e.g. by glueing, to the other along the spine portion thereof, the other of these two intermediate sheets being attached to the cover sheet or having means for attaching it to the cover sheet. These intermediate sheets also bear location means comprising a series of markings similar to those on the cover sheet or the said member.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings of which:

In these various figures, similar parts are designated by a common reference number.
Figure 2 shows a location sheet I which together with the cover sheet 2 of Figure I which is in the form of a pocket, and the spine strip 3 (illustrated in Figure 3) and forms a unit for constructing a transparent book cover or jacket.
The location sheet I is a sheet of opaque paper, to be thrown away after use, which presents along one of its longitudinal edges 4 and 5, e.g. its inferior edge 5, a series of horizontal parallel lines 6, some of which 6' are shown by continuous lines and the others 6" by broken lines, the spaces between these lines being designated 6"'.
The continuous lines 6' are e.g. spaced from one another by 0.5 cm., while the distance between a line 6" in broken lines and the nearest line 6' in continuous line is e.g. of 0.25 cm. These lines 6', 6" and interlines 6"' are used to locate exactly the measures of the height of the books which height can vary between e.g. 16 and 23 cm.
The location sheet I also presents, at a certain distance from each of its lateral left 7 and right 8 edges, a series of vertical parallel lines 9, some of which 9' are continuous and the others 9"' are broken lines. The lines 9' and 9" are separated by spaces 9"', the spaces between the lines 9', and between the lines 9" and the adjacent lines 9' respectively are, for example, 1 cm.
or 0.5 cm. and of 0.5 cm. and 0.25 cm.
The location sheet I also has two vertical middle lines II and II' and, on both sides of these lines, a series of lines 10"'. The lines 10', 10" and interlines 10"' are used to locate to within a mm., the thickness of the portion intended to cover the spine of the books. The spaces between the lines 10 are the same as between the lines 6.
The cover sheet 2 shown in Figure 2 is a transparent or transluent sheet e.g.
"Cellophane" (Registered Trade Mark) or plastics material, intended to form a book cover or jacket.
Figures 3 and 4 respectively show a back 13 and a front 12 view of the spine strip 3.
On its front side 12, (shown as a mounted book cover) the spine strip can be decorated with ornamental designs suited to the thickness and the height of a book, even when the spine strip has been cut to the desired size; a label fitting, in a frame or pocket 14 on the spine can be used to indicated the title of the book and the author. Instead of a label, a manuscript or typewritten inscription indicating the title of the book or the name of the author may be applied directly withing the frame. This frame must of course be contained within the minimum spine size. Ornamental guiding marks can be provided to permit a correct alignment of the letters of the inscription.
On the back side 13 of the spine strip there are a series of vertical parallel lines 15, some of which 15' are continuous and the others 15" are broken, these lines being separated by spaces 15"'. Likewise, along its superior 16 and/or inferior 17 edges, the spine strip has on its back 13, a series of horizontal parallel lines 18, some of which 18' are continuous and the others 18" broken, the spaces being designated 18"'.
The spaces between the lines 15 and the lines 18, which have the same functions as the lines 6 and 10, are the same as for the lines 6.
The spine strip 3 shown in Figures 3 and 4 is made of an opaque material, such as paper, imitation leather, leather or plastics material and of any colour; green, white, red, golden or silver.
To cover a book with the cover or jacket shown in Figures 1 to 4 the procedure is as follows:
It is first of all necessary to measureexactly the height, the width and the thickness of the book to be covered. Next apply these measurements to the location sheet, identifying those vertical lines 9' or 9" or spaces lines 9"', horizontal lines 6' or 6" or spaces 6"', and vertical lines 10' or 10" or spaces 10"', which correspond respectively to the width, the height or the thickness of the book. Then superpose the cover sheet on the location sheet and cut the two sheets along the lines 6' or 6" or in spaces 6"' and, at a chosen distance from the edges 20 and 21, along the lines 9' or 9" or in the spaces 9"', which have been marked, so as to obtain a transparent cover sheet with flaps 22 folded as shown in Figure 5.Cut at the desired size (height and width) of spine strip 3, is cut using the vertical location lines 15' or 15"' or spaces 15"' for the width and the location lines 18' or 18" or spaces 18"' for the height.
After having determined the size of the spine strip 3 the cover sheet 2 following the vertical lines 10' or 10" or spaces 10"' of the location sheet the cover sheet is folded where selected so as to produce a draft of the cover shown in Figure 5.
When, as in the embodiment of Figure 2, the cover sheet 2 is transparent or translucent, the location sheet I is used only to determine exactly the sizes of the book cover and is thrown away afterwards.
The cover sheet 2 and the spine strip 3 can be attached together in different ways as described below.
The spine strip 3, may have on one and/or the other of its front 12 or back 13 sides, a pressure sensitive adhesive coating, whereby the visible side 12 of the spine strip 3 forming the spine of the book cover can be affixed in the correct position on the cover sheet 2 cut to the desired size while the reverse 13 of the spine strip 3 is glued to the spine of the book. In Figure 5 a spine strip 3 has been shown, provided, on one side with a self adhesive coat protected by a removable or release sheet.
As stated above, the spine strip can be glued directly on the surface 23 of the cover sheet 2 and on the front or back side thereof. Obviously a spine strip can be preglued to the cover sheet 2.
Figure 6 shows a spine strip 3 preattached to the verso side of the transparent cover sheet 2 by means of two labels one of which is pre-fixed; these labels 24 can be transparent and self adhesive or have a pressure sensitive coating on one or each side. These labels 24 can have the form of a dihedral as shown in Figure 6. One half of one of these labels 24 is glued to the spine strip 3, along its superior 16 edge and the other half of the cover sheet. The spine strip 3 must be cut where necessary along the selected lines 15. The other label 24 is fixed to the spine strip and to the cover sheet after folding over the inferior edge 26 of the portion 23 forming the spine of the cover.
Instead of providing a spine strip already attached to the cover sheet 2 by a label, it is clearly possible to use two free labels to glue the spine strip to the cover sheet 2, along both the superior 16 and the inferior 17 edges.
In the embodiment of Figure 7, the spine strip 3 has on its reverse side a self adhesive tape which may be transparent, so as to form a flap 27 articulated in 28 at each of the edges 16 and 17 of the spine strip.
When using the location lines, the horizontal 18' or 18" or spaces 18"' and the vertical 15' or 15" or spaces 15"', the spine strip is cut to the desired size. One of the flaps 27 of the spine strip subsists while the other has been removed by cutting the removed portion, a part of the self adhesive tape is recovered and used to attach the inferior edge of the spine strip to the cover sheet 2. This spine strip 3 is then attached to the cover sheet along its edges 16 and 17 using the chosen lines 10 of the location sheet.
In Figure 8, the spine strip 3 is articulated in 29 to a support strip 30 which may be coated with a pressure sensitive self adhesive, on the side facing the back 13 of the spine strip 3. In this embodiment the cover sheet 2 is merely slipped into the desired position determined by the angle formed by the spine strip 3 and the support strip 30. Thereafter, the support strip may be affixed to the cover sheet 2 and to the flap 27 of the spine strip so that they are bonded together.
Instead of providing an adhesive coating on one of the sides of the support strip 30.
one can affix a label 24 or a flap 27 on the side 31 of the support strip 30, after having interposed the cover sheet 2 between the spine strip 3 and the support strip 30.
In Figure 9 is shown a jacket or book cover as described above, fitted on a book 32 and in which the spine strip 3 extends outside the cover sheet 2. It is clearly possible to ensure that the spine strip extends inside the cover sheet 2 that is to say between the spine 33 of the book 32 and the portion 23 of the cover sheet 2, which covers this spine 33.
When, as shown in Figure 9, the spine strip 3 extends outside the cover sheet 2, it can be protected by a protection sheet or supplementary cover sheet also transparent.
cut out from the cover sheet 2 and applied to the outside surface of the cover sheet 2 which can be welded to the protection sheet along their vertical left and/or right edges.
Figure 10, shows an opaque cover sheet 2, made of e.g. imitation leather, plastics material or strong paper. This cover sheet 2 has location lines, the horizontal 6, the vertical lateral 9, and the vertical central 10.
Moreover the cover sheet 2 has along its superior 35 and/or inferior 36 edges a self adhesive tape 37, which may be removable.
On the side opposite that having the lines 6, 9 and 10 and the self adhesive tapes, the cover sheet 2 bears decorative designs.
Decorations are also arranged on the portion intended to form the spine of the cover and those portions intended to cover the front page of the book. These designs are conceived so as to permit cutting or folding of the cover without impairing the effect. Since the locations means are on the back, a location sheet such as shown in
Figure 2 is not necessary.
After folding the cover sheet 2 of Figure 10 so as to obtain a book cover, similar to the one shown in Figure 5, it is possible to produce a cover such as shown in Figure 11 simply by folding the longitudinal superior and inferior flaps 38 inwardly to the front page of the book 32, and folding the lateral flaps 39 of the cover sheet 2, which have previously been cut out and folded over.
Figure 12, shows a cover comprising an opaque cover sheet 2 like the one of Figure 10, an intermediate sheet 40 glued in 53 to the cover sheet 2, as well as two rectangular leaflets 41 which can be transparent. On the back portion having location lines 6, 9, 11 and 10, the cover sheet can have lateral self adhesive coatings 42. The intermediate sheet 40 presents the same location lines as those of the cover sheet. Like the leaflets 41 they have a self adhesive coat 43 or carry a double-coated self adhesive tape along the upper and lower edges.
Figure 13 illustrates how the elements shown in Figure 12 are assembled to make the cover of a book 32. After cutting and pre-folding the cover sheet 2 and the intermediate sheet 40 to the desired size (using the location line 6, 9, 11 and 10 drawn on the front of the intermediate sheet 40 and possibly also the location lines on the back of the cover sheet 2) the two sheets 2 and 40 are applied on the book, as shown in Figure 13; afterwards the two leaflets are affixed to the back of the intermediate sheet 40, after folding (as shown in 44) their upper and lower edges and fixing the adhesive tapes 43 on the back of the interpolated sheet 40.
The leaflets 41 which are fixed in this way form loop 45 in which the lateral flaps 39 and 46 of the sheets 2 and 40 can be slipped as shown chain-dotted in 47.
The self adhesive coats 42 on the back of the cover sheet 2, along the lateral edges are used to affix flaps 39 and 46 which are then slipped into the loops 45. The book cover obtained is characterized by solidity and a fine finish.
Figures 14 and 15 show a more elaborate book cover in which the cover sheet is in one piece with a pocket 49 intended to contain the front or the back of a book 32.
Moreover, the cover sheet 2 presents location lines 9, as well as two adhesive bands 37 extending respectively along its upper 35 and lower 36 edges.
After being fitted to the book 32 as shown in Figure 15, the cover sheet is merely cut according to the desired length (50), then the upper and lower edges of the cover sheet are cut to the width of the spine as in 51. Next, the cover sheet is folded along the line 52 after the upper and the lower adhesive bands have been cut. The cover sheet is then folded inwardly over the back 48 of the book, inwardly folding both remaining adhesive bands 37 producing a pocket similar to the pocket 49.
The above mentioned adhesive coats can be directly applied on their support or can be self adhesive tapes having adhesive on both sides. The use of such self adhesive tapes is very advantageous since it is possible to move them to a desired position.
The transparent models can be folded either in the middle (if the material is flexible) or on one edge of the thickness of the book (if the material is less flexible) and welded on the lateral side and on the inferior edge or at 1.5 cm. from the edges to obtain a pocket, and so that it has a smaller length (for the display) in which to keep the location sheet. This also concerns the model with the spine strip and the model of Figure
10. A transparent model with such a pocket can have a simple self adhesive coloured strip applied near the upper and lower edges. The lower strip will be removed to the right position of the height of the book.
These two strips will serve to fix the cover sheet on the book.
