Abstract
1439821 Communicating with the blind R L GORTON 2 May 1974 [6 Feb 1973] 5738/73 Heading G5G Apparatus enabling the blind to read punched cards by touch comprises optical means for scanning sequential columns of a card individually, and means for imparting information relating to the location of any hole or holes in a column, as detected by the scanning means, to a tactile output. As shown, the card 20 is mounted in a frame 12 movable on slide 13 carried by a cabinet 10. A scanning device (not illustrated) is arranged to scan sequential columns of the card, and information relating to each individual column is fed to output keys 30 providing a tactile output by vibrating, by being heated, or by imparting a small electric shock. The scanning device comprises a slot associated with a light source on one side of the card and photo receptors on the other, the columns being brought successively into register with the slot either manually by touching a key 15 engaged with a notched bar 16 or, in another embodiment, electromechanically by means of a stepping motor and lead screw (Fig. 3, not shown). The keys are preferably so shaped and disposed that their surfaces conform to the shape of a contacting finger in one extended but reposed position (Fig. 2, not shown).
