Abstract
1439183 Treating Al prior to brazing SOC ANON DES USINES CHAUSSON 31 Aug 1973 [26 Sept 1972] 41204/73 Headings C7E and C7F [Also in Division B3] Al and Al-based alloy is treated with an acid or alkaline aqueous pickling bath containing at least one compound of a metal less electronegative than Al to remove any Al oxide present and provide a coating of the said metal, the Al or alloy is then formed into articles, and these are placed in brazing relationship and heated, whereby at least part of said coating metal is melted, to braze the articles. Typically said coating metal is Zn; this is applied to Al bands or sheets from a bath containing Zn oxide, sulphate, or fluoborate, e.g. a bath of 300 g/l NaOH, 75 g/l ZnO, 80 g/l NaCN and 3 g/l Cu cyanide, or a bath of HF + 750 g/l ZnSo 4 . After forming articles, either (1) a flux is applied in aqueous medium, dried, then heated to melt the Zn and cause brazing or (2) where the Al was coated with Al-Si before the Zn, a dry flux is applied before brazing or (3) metal coated with Zn is coated by a blow-pipe with Al-Si and flux and heated to braze.
