Abstract
1436544 Punching; making dies; stamping SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd 25 May 1973 [25 May 1972] 24556/72 Headings B3W B3A and B3Q [Also in Division B4] To sever sheet material 8, Fig. 1, such as metal, paper or plastics, a ram 5 forces the sheet against a die 4 and an adjacent shoulder 10 through an intermediate elastomeric pad 7 so that spaced parts of the sheet are firmly held while they are severed from each other by the edge 9 of the die. The pad may be surroundedby a wall 6. In an embodiment for shearing a perforated blank 35 from a sheet 26, Fig. 10, an annular die 20 is associated with shoulders 23 and 24. To form a small perforation a steel pin replaces the shoulder 24. The shoulders 10, 23 and 24 may each be of one piece construction and be integral with a backing plate 3. Alternatively, as shown, molten alloy may be poured into the annular space 12 between a steel ring 11 or 21 and the die 4 or 20 and the edge of the cooled alloy cut away. A eutectic alloy of zinc, tin and bismuth having a melting point of about 100‹ C. is specified. The upper surface of the shoulder may be slightly higher or lower than that of the die. The die may be shaped to form and shear a blank simultaneously.
