Abstract

1,212,275. Punching. JOHN DALE (FOUNDRIES) Ltd. 23 July, 1969 [26 July, 1968], No. 35925/68. Heading B3W. Hexagonal slugs are punched out of aluminium sheet or strip by two lines of hexagonal punches and dies staggered and spaced so that the whole width of the strip between the outermost punches and dies is cut into hexagons without waste. Strip material fed between guides 8 to a first line of punches and dies (dies 13a-13c shown) until it contacts gauging stops 21 and a first punching stroke, is performed. The sheet is advanced, the stops 21 now acting as side guides, and further punching strokes are performed. Since the second line of punches only have to shear the trailing edge of a hexagon to form a slug the dies 14a and 14b have apertures shaped to retain one or more slugs from the preceding punching strokes to prevent the partially severed slug from tilting during punching. The strip may be punched by circular punches and dies (dies 10 shown) before the slug-blanking operation to form slugs each with a central hole, pilot pins (17), (Figs. 1 and 3, not shown) being provided in the first line of punches for locating in the holes. The pins may be resiliently mounted in the punches and may be removable or punches may be replaced by pilot-less punches it non- apertured slugs are to be produced. Alternatively, pilot pins may be mounted in the upper bolster between the two lines of punches and dies to locate in holes punched at a previous stroke by the first line of punches. The stop arrangement may include portions between the stops 21 for engaging the three flats forming the forward edge of each of the parts of the strip underlying the punches of the second line. A stripper plate (20), Fig. 1 (not shown), is provided.
