Abstract

1435641 Fusible protector RELIABLE ELECTRIC CO 11 Feb 1974 [9 March 1973] 06157/74 Heading H2G A protective device comprises contacts 35, 40 which are grounded when solder 76 is melted either by an auxiliary heater 79 in overcurrent conditions or by prolonged arcing across gap 74 to ground in series with the solder 76 in overvoltage conditions. The device also comprises a representative pair of terminal pins 25, 29 in a dielectric plastics base 15, said pins electrically and mechanically joined to flat spring contact 35 and contact 40 respectively. These contacts are normally joined in series through end 80, metal bobbin 62, heating coil 79 which connects the lower disc 63 of the metal bobbin to the metal ring 75, and end 77. Ring 75 is separated from the bobbin shaft by an insulator 73. The arcing circuit comprises in series the ground pin 27, leg 48, strip 45, conducting cup 64 enclosing carbon blocks 70, 68 separated by the arc gap 74, copper cap 84, metal cylinder 82, solder 76 thence through the bobbin direct to contact 35 or through winding 79 to contact 40. The two carbon blocks 68, 70 are separated by an insulating member 72 and gap 74 is designed to requirements. Under persistent arcing conditions solder 76 melts and the spring action of contact 35 pushes the bobbin assembly on to the turned lip 69 of the grounded cup 64. End 77 of contact 40 maintains sliding contact with ring 75 (Fig. 5, not shown). It is stated that arcing of short duration is insufficient to melt solder 76. In high current conditions arcing need not necessarily occur, in which case solder 76 is melted by heat from coil 79. Conducting cup 64 is separated from contact 35 by their dielectric tape strip 52, which may be of a type that melts when arcing occurs. In this case, contact 35 is directly grounded. Two sets of protective devices are on the same base 15 (Fig. 3, not shown) with insulating sleeving 66 to prevent arcing between sets. The dummy pin 28 ensures single-orientation insertion into a communication line circuit. The unit has a dielectric plastics housing 16.
