Abstract

1383578 Protective arrangements RELIABLE ELECTRIC CO 5 Oct 1972 [6 Oct 1971] 45878/72 Heading H2K [Also in Division H1] A line protector, e.g. for telecommunication equipment, comprises a line circuit with interconnected line terminals 25, 29, a further circuit extending from the line circuit to an earthing terminal (not shown), the further circuit comprising an earthing strip 45, an insulating strip 52 normally interrupting the further circuit, and over-voltage responsive means effective for melting the strip to close the further circuit to earth the line. The over-voltage means is a module having a conducting plug 62a biased by a spring 84 towards a conducting cup 64a, but normally restrained by a solder pellet 76a, and a spark gap assembly having carbon electrodes 68a, 70a. Over-voltage transients on the line merely cause arcing at the spark gap, but under prolonged overvoltage conditions, the continuing arcing causes the pellet 76a to melt and enable the spring 84 to move the plug 62a into contact with the cup 64a to complete the earthing circuit. In the event of prolonged overvoltage of relatively low magnitude such that the solder does not melt, the heating of the carbon electrode 70a causes the strip 52 to melt so that the earthing strip 45 is brought directly into contact with the line circuit. The line circuit may include fixed spring blades 86, 87 co-operating with a moving printed circuit board 90 having contact areas 88, 95 interconnected by the heating coil 97 of a thermal latch device. This device comprises a fixed pawl 200 co-operating with a ratchet wheel 192 on a spindle soldered to a sleeve 180 in the board 90. In the event of overcurrent, the solder melts and the wheel turns to release the board to open the line, to earth it and to complete an alarm circuit. A single housing may enclose two such protectors, common earthing and alarm terminals being provided.
