In the embodiment shown the needles are moved axially by a series of cams 20. Loop transferring needle N1 follows path YX, while the loop receiving needle N2 follows path XX. The transferring needle is lifted over the receiving needle by plate 46 of a U-shaped cam 43. Plate 47 controls the extremity of needle N2, raising it as it is withdrawn to receive the loop. Needle N1 is flexed laterally when it strikes a rotatable wheel 41 or 42, or in another embodiment a fixed cam. As the lock is advanced needle butts 17 enter the appropriate tracks and are raised. Latch 9 of needle N. is held open by magnets 34, 35 and edges of cams 37, 39. When needle N1 is advanced by edge 26c, its extremity strikes wheel 41 which is freely rotatable, or positively rotated (Fig. 15 not shown), and is thereby flexed to cross the neighbouring receiving needle N2-Fig. 8(II). Needle N2 is projected by edge 24c and flexed slightly by the steep rise on plate 47 so that it enters the loop. The loop passes over the back of the latch of needle N1. When N2 is withdrawn to take the loop its butt passes down edge 26d in a portion P of the track of reduced height. The needle is thus flexed to raise its extremity and prevent escape of the loop. In modifications the latches are opened merely mechanically; the wheels are rotated by the passing needles; and the needles flexed by cams of shallower slope than the butt cams, acting on the extremities (Figs. 12, 15, 17 respectively, not shown).
