Abstract

1432354 Tobacco and food additives WILKINSON SWORD Ltd 19 July 1973 [20 July 1972 24 Oct 1972] 33994/72 and 49039/72 Headings A2B and A2C [Also in Divisions A5 and C5] A composition capable of stimulating the cold receptors of the nervous system of the human body comprises a cold receptor stimulant and a carrier thereof, the stimulant being a sulphoxide or sulphone of formula RSO x R<SP>10</SP> wherein R<SP>10</SP> is alkyl, optionally containing carboxy or alkoxycarbonyl substituents; x is 1 or 2; and R is either where R 1 is H or C 1-5 alkyl, R 2 is C 1-6 alkyl, R 3 is C 1-8 alkyl, R 1 , R 2 and R 3 together provide a total of 3-15 carbon atoms, and with R<SP>1</SP> 6-18 carbon atoms, with the proviso that, when R, is H and x is 1, then at least one of R 2 , R 3 and R 10 is branched; or R is wherein R* is C 1-5 alkyl, n is 0, or an integer from 1 to 4 and the total number of carbon atoms provided by R* and R<SP>10</SP> is from 2 to 12. The stimulant may be used in an ingestible composition, topically administrable composition, lotion, dentifrice, ointment, or pharmaceutical composition. The stimulant may be impregnated in a cleansing tissue, or a tooth pick. The stimulant may be incorporated with suitable flavourants and colourants into comestible compositions and beverages. The stimulant may also be incorporated into tobacco preparations such as tobacco and cigarette filter tips. Typical sulphoxides and sulphones exemplified are 3-methyl pent-3-yl isopropyl sulphoxide, n-hexyl 2, 3-dimethylbut-3-yl sulphoxide, 2-methyl non-3-yl propyl sulphone, di-sec. butyl sulphoxide, p-menth-3- yl methyl sulphoxide, ethyl carboxymethyl-pmenth-3-yl sulphoxide and n-butyl 1-isobutyl cyclohexyl sulphoxide.
