Abstract
1431861 Controlling nuclear reactors UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 16 Jan 1974 [9 Feb 1973] 6579/73 Heading G6C A nuclear reactor, e.g. a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor with downflow cooling, embodies a control system including a flexible or filamentary neutron-absorbing member 8 which, when lowered with the core 2, piles up against stop means so as to increase its neutronabsorbing effect on the reaction. As shown (Fig. 1) the chain 8, e.g. of boron steel, piles up within core channel 10 thereby simulating a bottom-entry control rod. The channel is cooled by gas throughflow from upper plenum 5 to lower plenum 6. Links of chain 8 may comprise boron powder-filled metal tubes bent to shape. As an alternative to a chain, the member may comprise articulated plates, or bodies threaded on a cable. Means for lowering and raising the member 8 comprise (Fig. 3) a stepping motor 25 which drives a wheel 9 and a storage drum 22. A weight 23 compresses a spring 34 when the member 8 is fully raised, as shown; the weight and spring provide forces additional to those provided by member 8 with its end-weight 21, for accelerating the member 8 into the core for rapid shut-down when control of motor 25 is removed. Weight 23 is stopped by shockabsorber 40 and member 8 is stopped by, and piles up against, shock-absorber 11.
