1,076,708. Controlling reactors. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Sept. 27. 1965 [Oct. 13, 1964], No. 41008/65. Addition to 1,064,382. Heading G6C. In a modification of the device of Specification 1,064,382 for regulating the power of a nuclear reactor, a neutron-absorbing element consisting of at least one neutron-absorbing chain is adapted to be manipulated within the vertical reactor channel, each chain comprising a first portion of neutron-absorbing material and a second portion of non-absorbing material, the portions extending end to end so that they act on the reactivity of the reactor according to which portion of the chain is situated in the reactor channel. A detachable container is mounted at the bottom of the channel to receive the first portion when withdrawn from the channel and the links of the second portion co-operate with a sprocket wheel placed at the top of the channel, along with the sprocket drive, in a second detachable container in which the entire neutron-absorbing element can be stored. The non-absorbing chain portion may be fabricated of aluminium or zirconium metal or alloys, or of a steel which does not contain boron. Boron steel may be used for the neutron-absorbing chain portion. The device is particularly advantageous in the case of reactors in which a coolant gas flows downwardly through the channels in the direction opposite to the movement of insertion of the neutron-absorbing elements since the resultant deformation of the neutron flux distribution and hence of the thermal flux distribution improves the cooling of the fuel elements located within the adjacent channels. The device can be used for emergency shut down in which case the neutron-absorbing chain portions are fabricated of steel having a high boron content and, in normal operation of the reactor, have their free ends located at the level of the top of the moderator stack. The length of chain between this level and the sprockets constitutes sufficient driving weight to cause the chains to drop into the channel when the electromagnetic clutch of the drive mechanism is no longer supplied with current. In this modification, it is no longer necessary to employ a detachable container at the bottom of the channel.
