Abstract
1431376 Gas separation IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 April 1973 [17 April 1972 19 Oct 1972 20 Dec 1972] 17580/72 48202/72 and 58688/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division B1] I.C. engine exhaust gases are treated for reduction of nitrogen oxides and, if desired, oxidation of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons using a catalyst comprising Ni and/or Co metal or a compound reducible thereto, a refractory oxidic support, a minor proportion, calculated as metal atoms with respect to the total of Ni and/or Co, of copper as metal or a compound reducible thereto and 0À001 to 1% w./w. of silver, gold or a platinum group metal but less than 5% w./w. of chromia. Nitrogen oxides are removed by passing the exhaust gases over the catalyst at net-reducing conditions, suitably at a reducing power of the exhaust gas, calculated in volume percentages as CO + H 2 -2O 2 of at least 0À1 and up to 8. The gases are suitably treated at at least 300‹ C., e.g. 500- 700‹ C. under steady running conditions at a volume/volume space velocity of 0À06-10<SP>5</SP> to 3À0 x 10<SP>5</SP> hour<SP>-1</SP>. The reductive treatment may be followed by addition of air and an oxidation stage to remove carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons.
