Abstract

1430882 Sulphonamides; 2-chlorethylamine hydrochloride SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 17 April 1974 16881/74 Heading C2C Sulphonamides of formula RSO 2 NHC 2 H 4 Cl in which R is a C 1 -C 6 alkyl group or an optionally substituted phenyl group are produced by reacting a sulphonyl halide of formula RSO 2 X, in which X is chlorine or bromine, with 2-chloroethylamine or a salt thereof in the presence of excess of 2-chloroethylamine or of an additional added base. The process may be carried out in a halogenated hydrocarbon solvent. Suitable salts for use as starting materials are 2-chlorethylamine sulphate, hydrochloride, hydrobromide or acetate. The hydrochloride may be prepared by chlorinating mono-ethanolamine hydrochloride with thionyl chloride and removing sulphur dioxide or sulphites from the mixture, the ethanolamine hydrochloride preferably being prepared by reacting ethanolamine in the presence of water, with a mixture of hydrogen chloride and sulphur dioxide obtained as a by-product in the chlorination step.
