Abstract
1430351 Fused salt electrolysis cell NORSK HYDRO AS 29 Jan 1974 [ 30 Jan 1973] 04124/74 Heading C7B In the electrolysis of molten metal chlorides, e.g. for Mg production, in a cell having alternate anodes 1 and double-acting cathodes 2, and in which a partition 10 separates the electrolysis region 3 from the metal recovery region 5, the electrolyte circulates by natural convection as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 (which are respectively endon and lateral vertical sections), separation of electrolyte and metal from chlorine gas being achieved by reversing flow of the former relative to the rising gas bubbles below the gas collection regions 4 and passing this flow through ducts 6 in the cathodes to the metal separating region. The metal floats to the top in this region while electrolyte recirculates. The cathodes may have a sloping base 12 and top portion 11 and may contain one or more ducts whose entrances are in the cathodes' horizontal top. The duct outlet is preferably vertical, as shown.
