Abstract

1429569 Time switches AMF Inc 24 July 1974 [11 Sept 1973] 42762/73 Heading H1N [Also in Division H2] A system for defrosting a refrigerator comprises a switch 12 having four blades 12A-12D, certain of which blades carry contacts 13-16 and which are operable by cams 18A-18D carried on a shaft 18E, the cams 18 being moved in a first instance by an adjustable tappet 21 secured to the dial 22 of a time clock driven through gearing 24 by a motor 23, which tappet 21 co-operates with a cam 17 on the shaft 18E, the first movement of the cams 18 causing the blades 12 to move so that the compressor and fan motors are switched off and the defrosting heater switched on. When the refrigerator is sufficiently defrosted an electric motor is energized, which, by way of gearing 26 drives a cam 27 and eccentric pin 28 to move a lever 30 about a fulcrum 31 to cause a pawl 34 to move the cams 18 so that the blades 12 are again moved whereby the compressor motor is switched on and the defrost heater switched off. The cam 27 operates a microswitch 37 so that the electric motor is switched off after the pawl 34 has moved the cams 18. After a given time the electric motor is again energized whereupon the pawl 34 is again moved to again operate the cams 18 and the blades 12 whereupon the fan motor is reconnected. The tappet 21 is provided with a member 40 which co-operates with a cam 17A on the shaft 18E to terminate the defrost operation should any failure of the mechanism occur. In a further embodiment the electric motor operating the lever 30 is replaced by an electromagnetic solenoid (49, Fig. 7, not shown) which when energized causes operation of a clutch member so that the motor 23 causes the further movements of the cams 18 by way of a worm-wheel (51) fixed thereto.
