Abstract

1394311 Magnetron energized heating systems LITTON INDUSTRIES Inc 18 Sept 1973 [7 Dec 1972] 43848/73 Heading H2H A microwave oven is provided with a microwave generating means which is selectively controlled to operate in one or other of two modes, the first of which is an intermittent operation employed for defrosting frozen items and the other is a continuous operation used for cooking the items. A microwave generating system 11 for an oven is supplied from an A.C. source 17 over conductors 13, 15 between which are connected three parallel branch circuits 19, 21, 23. Branch 23 contains a timer motor 37 driving a cam 38 which operates a switch 27 in the branch 19. Branch 19 also includes a start switch 25 and a relay 33 having a self-holding contact 31 and a contact 35 in conductor 13 which forms the main switch for the control circuit. Branch 21 of the circuit includes a motor 39 driving an equally divided cam 40 which, in operation, intermittently opens and closes a switch 41, the branch 21 also including a switch 43 having two positions, a so-called "defrost position" as shown and a lower position for continuous cooking operation. In operation the timer motor 39 is set to a time suitable for defrosting so moving the cam 38 that the switch 27 closes. The start switch 25 is depressed whereupon relay 33 energizes and is held on by closure of contact 31 and also closes the main switch 35. The "defrost" motor 39 now runs to open and close switch 41 causing intermittent energization of the generating system 11 so as to intermittently energize the oven and defrost the food therein. When cooking of the food is required the switch 43 is placed in its cooking or lower position thereby by-passing the switch 41 to cause continuous energization of the generating system 11 and hence of the oven. In other embodiments the connection to the left hand side of motor 37 may be connected to the junction of switches 35, 41, 43 and a single motor may drive the cams shown in Fig. 1 together with an extra cam which operates the switch 43.
