Abstract
1429341 Rotary reciprocating IC engines; steam engines E MAOZ 3 April 1973 [22 Feb 1973 27 Feb 1973] 8797/73 and 9582/73 Headings F1B and F1M At least one piston 2 is rotatable with a cylinder block 3 relative to a stator 4 and the piston reciprocates as the block rotates through the action of a cam 5. The piston is mounted on, or in, a guide 1a which carries the lateral loads of the piston. In the four-stroke engine shown the pistons 2 have followers 7 on pins 6 which extend through slots 31 in the radial guides 1a mounted on the output shaft 1. The part-spherical or cylindrical outer surface of the block 3 has sealing rings 3a and the cylinder bores communicate with inlet and outlet ports A and B as the block rotates. The spark plug 10 may be replaced by a fuel injector in a diesel engine. The cylinder bores may have their axes as tangents to a circle centred on the output shaft axis, Fig. 4 (not shown). The engine may have six radial cylinders and operate on a four or six-stroke cycle, Fig. 6 (not shown), or have eight radial cylinders, Fig. 7 (not shown). The pistons may be linked to an endless belt or chain (14), Fig. 8 (not shown), running on rollers (15) on the profile of the cam 5. The engine may operate on a two-stroke cycle two of the four pistons in a cylinder block being pumping pistons supplying an air/fuel charge to the bores of the working pistons, Fig. 9 (not shown). The pins 6 of pairs of opposed pistons may be connected by rigid links (16), Fig. 10 (not shown). The four pistons in a block may be connected by telescopic assemblies (17), Fig. 12 (not shown), or rigid links (17), Fig. 13 (not shown). The pistons may be mounted on guides external to the pistons by means of yokes (23) Fig. 14 (not shown). The block may be rigidly connected to the guides by tie bars (19), Fig. 15 (not shown). The stator 4 may be located radially inwardly of the pistons with the guides extending radially inwardly from an annular member (1b), Fig. 5 (not shown),' surrounding the pistons and block. The engine may be mounted in a cooling air duct (20), Fig. 16 (not shown), which also surrounds the enginedriven axial flow fan (21). Two or more banks of cylinders may be connected to provide balancing.
