Abstract

1429004 Flame-retardant phosphonate diesters HOOKER CHEMICALS & PLASTICS CORP 22 March 1973 [30 March 1972 (2)] 13909/73 Heading C2P [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] The invention comprises phosphonate ester derivatives of the formula Z-CH 2 P(O)(OE) 2 wherein Z is XHNC(O)NX<SP>1</SP>-, X 2 NC(O)NH-, or (EO) 2 P(O)CH 2 NHC(O)NX-, wherein X is H, C 1 -C 6 hydroxyalkyl or C 1 -C 6 alkyl and each X may be the same or different, X<SP>1</SP> is C 1 -C 6 hydroxyalkyl or C 1 -C 6 alkyl or X and X<SP>1</SP> together are C 2 -C 6 alkylene or C 2 -C 6 alkyleneoxyalkylene and E is C 1 -C 6 alkyl. They may be obtained by reacting a compound: ZCH 2 OH with a trialkyl phosphite: P(OE) 3 and the reaction can be carried out neat, in a solvent or in excess phosphite. The products may be reacted with formaldehyde to form their N- hydroxymethyl derivatives and are useful as flame retardants for textiles, thermoplastic resins and thermosetting resins.
