Abstract

1428140 Laminates GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO 16 July 1973 [7 Sept 1972] 7688/75 Divided out of 1428139 Heading B5N Laminating apparatus for making a sheet moulding compound comprises a horizontally arranged table support, means to feed continuous sheet 16b across the table, a vertically disposed doctor blade 22 in operative association with the table and supported by side wall members 33 whereby the blade, side wall members, sheet and table form a trough for containing a resin material 14 to be coated on to the moving sheet and the bottom edge of the blade doctors the coating, the blade having a plurality of orifices extending through an intermediate portion thereof and below the level of the resin, means for feeding a plurality of continuous fibres 12 through the resin and subsequently through the orifices to produce a plurality of substantially uniformly coated and formed bundles of fibres 12<SP>1</SP>, means, e.g. doctor blade 30, for coating a second continuous sheet 16a with the resin material 14 and means, e.g. rollers 38, for pressing together the sheets and sandwiching the coated bundles of fibres therebetween. Sheets 16a and 16b may be of polyethylene. The orifices in blade 22 each comprise a cylindrical portion and incoming tapered portion and are arranged in 4 parallel rows each horizontally off-set from adjacent rows. Rovings 12 may be of glass, sisal, hemp, asbestos, graphite, boron, metal, wool, cotton, polyester or nylon, and the resin which may contain a thickener, e.g. magnesium or calcium oxide, may be polyester, phenolic, epoxy, silicone, alkyd, acrylic or polyethylene. The tensile strength of the sheet moulding compound in a direction transverse to the orientation of the continuous rovings may be improved by diverting one or more of the continuous rovings to a chopping station located downstream from blade 22 and allowing the chopped roving to fall on to the bottom layer of resin and impregnated continuous rovings just before the top layer is combined therewith. A plurality of layers of sheet moulding compound oriented at angles to each other may bo pressed together.
