Abstract

1318693 Cellular laminated panel M A E RHIANDO 28 May 1970 [28 May 1969 29 July 1969] 27004/69 and 37996/69 Heading B5N Lightweight sheets and panels comprise (i) individual tubular elements or cores arranged with their axes parallel and each in contact with two or more other elements, the elements being arranged in superposed rows, (ii) elongate flexible bands or tapes extending transversely of and adhering to the elements, and (iii) adhesive or binding material holding the elements together. The elements (i) may be hollow cores of fibrous material (e.g. paper, cellulose, asbestos, glass, polypropylene, polyvinylchloride, wood pulp, jute, hessian, aluminium, carbon, rayon and cotton), metal, alloy or plastics; the fibrous material may be in woven or tape form and may be reinforced, and metals and alloys may be laminated with paper. The tapes (ii) may be adhesive paper tapes. The binder (iii) may be a thermosetting or thermoplastic resin, a rubber or an inorganic material, e.g. cements, plasters, ceramic glazes; many examples are given. The binder may also include additives such as fireresistant agents. Outer sheets of paper, plastics, foil or veneer may be provided. The panel is made by forming the rows of cores with tape(s) adhering thereto, applying the binder to the outer surface of the rows, collating the rows, compacting the assembly and setting the binder. The rows may be formed by delivering the cores at the correct spacing from a hopper and pressing the tape(s) thereon (see Figs. 3, 4, 14). In one embodiment the cores are spaced apart on a toothed wheel, and the tape is applied and is then crimped to bring the cores of the row into contact (see Fig. 21). The rows of cores may be fed between conveyer belts, which conveyers may be arranged to supply pressure (see Fig. 2) or may be provided with drivable compacting members between the belts (see Figs. 17, 18); arranged horizontally or vertically (see Figs. 2, 7), or may be compacted in a latch method after feeding between vertical dividers on a horizontal conveyer (see Fig. 8) A curing device may be disposed to circulate heated air through the cores (see Fig. 6). The apparatus illustrated in Figs. 2, 7, 8 and 10 does not illustrate the use of rows of cores adhered by tape, but may be adapted for this purpose.
