Abstract

1423484 Forming cored yarns SPANCO YARNS INC 11 Feb 1974 06187/74 Headings D1F and D1W Cored yarn is made by drafting a strand of parallel, untwisted, discontinuous fibres e.g. of polyester and/or cotton by passage through a roller drafting unit and, downstream thereof, wrapping a continuous binder strand e.g. a fine, nylon or polyester multifilament strand or yarn, about the drafted strand to form spaced helices therealong, as the drafted untwisted strand moves from the drafting rollers along a predetermined path. The discontinuous fibres are of a length sufficient to be engaged by and extend from the rollers of the unit while the leading ends are being wrapped by the binder strand. A continuous strand of "spandex" (comprising polyurethane) may be incorporated in the drafted strand and wrapped therewith. The fibre-aligning action of the draft rolls may be enhanced by air flowing longitudinally of the drafted fibre strand. As shown, a sliver 10 passes through a drafting unit 10, a guide 16 and a hollow chamber 22 of a bobbin-carrying spindle 20 (at a wrapping station 18) rotated by engagement of a belt 26 with a hub 24 so that a yarn 36 from the bobbin winds about strand 10 at 38. A vacuum source 28 induces an air flow in the same direction as the strand &c travel and also collects any loose lint in the strand. Nip rollers 30 (and/or others not shown) ensure uniformity of the final yarn taken-up on roll 32.
