Abstract
1422991 Testing cigarettes HAUNI-WERKE KORBER & CO KG 14 Feb 1973 [25 Feb 1972] 7298/73 Heading A2C [Also in Divisions G1 and G3] The density of a cigarette rod or other rod of tobacco or filter material is determined by two detectors 26, 27, one in which the rod is subjected to radio active radiation and the transmitted radiation is detected, and the other in which the rod is subjected to a stream of air which causes elastic deformation of the rod and the deformation is determined, e.g. by photo-electronic means. In a continuous rod cigarette manufacturing machine, Fig. 1 (not shown), the continuously produced rod 18 first passes through capacitor plates 57, 58 connected to a generator 59 which provides a signal dependent upon the moisture content of the tobacco. The rod then passes the first density detector 27 which comprises nozzles 36, 37 for directing air at the rod, a pulsed gallium-arsenide semiconductor diode 43, a silicon photo-electric element 44, lenses 49, 51 and diaphragms 47, 48. In place of one photoelectric device, a plurality of photo-electric devices may be provided in order to reduce the effect provided by small irregularities of the rod. Finally, the rod passes through the second detector 26 which comprises a #-ray source 31 and an ionisation detector 32. As shown in Fig. 3, the output of detector 26 is amplified and applied to a comparator 34 which also receives a nominal value signal from a source 35. The amplified output of detector 27 is corrected by the moisture signal in a device 53 whose output is applied to a comparator 54 which also receives a nominal value signal from a source 56. The outputs of the two comparators are applied to an amplifier 66 whose output controls the height of the rotary circular cutter 62 of the tobacco feed mechanism. The output of device 53 is also applied to a threshold value device 67 which is connected through a delay device 68 to the valve 69 of a pneumatic ejector. The rod is cut into cigarettes after passing through detector 26, and the ejector is operated to eject cigarettes which when tested by detector 27 produced signals which didn't reach the threshold value of device 67.
