Abstract

1,239,408. Rejecting faulty cigarettes. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. and D. W. MOLINS. 10 Oct., 1968 [11 Oct., 1967], No. 46373/67. Heading A2C. [Also in Division G1] In a method of manufacturing cigarettes wherein a continuous wrapped rod is formed from a stream of tobacco and a continuous web of wrapping material, the web is continuously examined before it is formed into the rod for its air porosity and the results used in rejecting unsatisfactory cigarettes. The web 1 of cigarette paper is fed through a device comprising a lower suction chamber 2 connected to suction through a port 3 and an upper test chamber 4 having a bleed hole 5 open to atmosphere and a port 6 connected to an air-pressuresensitive testing device. In addition to use of the test results to reject the cigarette(s) incorporating that portion of paper web 1 having holes or excessive porosity, the test results may be used to improve subsequent individual cigarette testing by adjusting the sensitivity of the latter test according to the measured porosity of the web 1. The web 1 may alternatively be examined electrostatically by establishing an electrical potential difference across it and detecting any discharge occurring through it.
