Abstract

1421908 Mould for electroslag refining ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 24 Aug 1973 [25 Aug 1972] 39717/72 Heading B3F A mould for electroslag refining has its walls 2 reinforced by vertically extending ribs 6 secured to the outer surfaces of the walls. The ribs 6 may be of cruciform, T-shaped or triangular cross-section and may be brazed, soldered or welded to the copper wall 2. Steel panels 9 may be secured to the ribs 6 and define passages 8 through which water is circulated. Alternatively, the walls 2 may be cooled by jets of water issuing from pipes (25). The mould is surrounded by a support structure 13, comprising vertical and horizontal girders 17 and 16 respectively, and is attached thereto by tie rods 18. Nuts 19 may be adjusted to correct any distortion of the mould wall 2 or to pull the wall 2 away from the ingot to facilitate extraction of the latter from the mould. In use, any differential expansion of the mould wall in the region of the slag pool is accommodated by local bowing of the walls 2 between the ribs 6. The arrangement may be such that there is a slight bowing of the walls 2 in their initial cold state. The mould may be formed in two parts, each comprising one side wall 2 and half of one end wall 3 secured together by bolts (7).
