Abstract
1420313 I C engine fuel injectors PLESSEY CO Ltd 27 March 1973 [1 Feb 1972 26 Feb 1972] 4609/72 and 8972/72 Heading F1B The nozzle 2, Fig. 1, or 54, Fig. 6, of an injector arrangement for injecting liquid fuel into the combustion air of a gas turbine or reciprocating engine is subjected to ultrasonic vibrations and the amount of fuel injected in a given period is varied by controlling the duration of injection in the period. The flow of fuel from the nozzle 2 or 54 is controlled by a ball-valve 15 or the nozzle 54 which is moved from its seat 14 or the end of the amplifier horn 37 due to the dynamic forces acting thereon when a Piezo-electric transducer element 6 of a stepped vibration amplifier is energized by an A.C. voltage of ultrasonic frequency and the nozzle vibrates. The valve 15 may be of ferromagnetic material, e.g. steel, or mounted on a magnetic armature to be additionally moved from its seat 14 by a D.C. energized solenoid coil 18. A plug (21), Fig. 2 (not shown), with external helical grooves (22) may be provided immediately upstream of the valve 15 to provide swirling of the fuel. The plug may be constructed and arranged as described in Specification 1389207. The nozzle may be mounted in a bore (33), Fig. 3 (not shown), in the cylinder head (31) of a diesel engine and a P.T.F.E. or nylon lift valve (41) with internal fuel passages co-operates with a seat (42) in the nozzle tip (39). A ball check-valve (45) upstream of the lift valve and biased by a common spring (43) prevents reverse fuel flow in the nozzle. The valve element at the nozzle tip may be formed by an external sleeve (57), Fig. 4 (not shown), with an annular turned-in lip (63) which engages a seat on the end of the nozzle tip. The nozzle valve element (48), Fig. 5 (not shown), may be mounted in the wall of an air induction passage (47) opposite the nozzle and be spring-biased against the end of the nozzle tip.
