Abstract
1418230 Polyester compositions TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 21 Dec 1973 [28 Dec 1972] 59632/73 Heading C3R A flame retardant composition comprises (A) a polyester derived from a dicarboxylic acid comprising at least 80 mol. per cent of terephthalic acid based on the total mols. of dicarboxylic acid and a diol comprising at least 80 mol. per cent of 1,4-butanediol based on the total mols. of diol; (B) from 4-30% wt. based on the polyester of a halogenated diphenylether of the formula wherein X 1 -X 10 represent hydrogen, chlorine or bromine atoms, at least 2 X's being chlorine or bromine atoms, as a flame retardant, and (C) from 0À01-3% wt. based on the polyester of a diepoxy compound which may be represented by the formula wherein R 1 and R 2 represent hydrogen atoms, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups, and R 1 and R 2 may be bonded to each other, and R represents an alkylene, cycloalkylene, arylene, alkarylene or aralkylene radical optionally interrupted by ether and/or ester groups and R may be optionally bonded to R 1 and/or R 2 . The composition may also comprise decabromodiphenyl and antimony trioxide as flame retardants. The polyester may be a homopolymer or copolymer. Blends of more than 70% wt. of the polyester and less than 30% wt. of other polymers may be used examples of which are listed. Suitable diepoxy compounds are polycondensates of epihalohydrin and a diol, bis- (2,3 - epoxypropanol)dicarboxylic acid esters, and cycloaliphatic diepoxides. In Examples 1- 4 compositions are prepared from polybutylene terephthalate, bisphenol A diglycidyl ether, antimony trioxide and either (i) a mixture of decabromodiphenyl (DBB) and hexabromodiphenyl ether (HBE) or (ii) decabromodiphenylether. In Example 5 compositions are prepared from polybutylene terephthalate, antimony trioxide and either (i) DBB, HBE and bis-(2,3- epoxypropyl) terephthalate, or (ii) DBB, HBE and cyclooctadiene 1,5-diepoxide, or (iii) DBB, HBE and an epoxy resin or (iv)-(vii) bisphenol A diglycidyl ether and either DBB and dibromodiphenylether, or DBB and tetra chlorodiphenyl ether, or decabromodiphenylether alone and together with DBB. The pelleted compositions are moulded into bars and tested for flame resistance and tensile strength.
